Zippy Steamers

Does anyone have Zippy garment steamers at your stores? We have several and the customers love them, many even come to our stores just because we are one of the only places that still have them. It appears that they are no longer being made and parts are getting hard to find. I don't want to get rid of them, but don't any way to keep them up and running. I've looked for alternatives, but most steamers require constant refilling of water which is not practical.

    Hello Paul,

Jiffy makes a full line of steamers that work great.

Just curious, do you make this equipment available for your customers to use? Or do your employees provide this service to your customers for a reasonable charge?

Does anyone use one of the Jiffy's? Any comments pro or con? Is there one model better than another for in house only steaming?
    Thank you!

We have always provided them for our customers to use, free of charge.  The problem with the Jiffy steamers is that they require refilling if the water tank, whereas the Zippy ones are conected  to the water supply directly.

Hi, what about customers burning themselves on the steam or kids playing around. Has anything ever happened and what do you do to prevent accidents? Other than that I think it's a great bonus for the customer.
    thanks,

    Guys,

I provided a free use Zippy steamer in the 1970s for my self serve dry cleaning customers.  I had 6 coin operated 8 lb. Westinghouse dry cleaning machines back then which vended for $2.00.  Here are some cons of providing a free use steamer.

    1.  Your customer will tie up a valuable parking space while using it.

    2.  You lose money each time it's being used.

    3.  There is a risk of a customer burning herself or damaging the item she is steaming.

    4.  Why provide a service that  has little value in the customer's eyes?  If she actually valued it, Jiffy would have sold a lot more coin operated units than free units.

    5.  Like all boilers, this small one also requires maintenance.

We operate a laundry service that is not open to the public. I'm hoping this Jiffy steamer will help with our small jobs that need steaming and a quick press. Not concerned about the public being hurt as we're the only ones operating the steamer. Just really need to know it works and is strong enough to make a difference.
    Thank you!

    Mary,

A Jiffy steamer is not a press ... it's a steamer.  So the result you get is similar to ironing a garment.   It's slow, tedious work.

    Mary,

Well, a true utility press likely lists for $12,000 today - just a wild guess.

Sorry, I cannot offer much help in this regard.

    Mary;

I can provide something. Make sure you charge enough so you can replace it later on. And make it worth your efforts.

I've never had anyone burn themselves in the 30+ years we've had them.  I consider it just one more amenity (along with free transportation and free coffee) that make my stores the best in the market and allows me to maintain the highest prices in the area.
